You mention Direct X, so we can assume you are running Windows.  To begin to
troubleshoot this, we need to know the following:

1)  EXACTLY which version of Windows?  95?  95 OSR2?  98?  98 SE?

2)  What version of Direct X?

3)  What is the ATI's device driver version number?
