Thanks. That worked.
I don't pretend to be able to fix this myself,
but it sure was confusing. I think that
the feature/button 'apply' sould mean to put
it into effect immediately. 'Save' to me means
preserve this setting for the next time the
application is run. I was only displaying a
previously captured file. Nothing was live
or needing to be dynamic. The variables were
all in memory, and should be able to be
displayed quickly.
I appreciate that the change could be performed
at all. I just ask for it to be easier.

You have to click on "File", and then "Quit", first. :-)
Unfortunately, currently, the code doesn't update the display if the
column preferences are changed; you have to save any capture (if you
have a live capture), exit, and then restart Ethereal to get the new
display.
