But that looks like he has both version 4.1.2 and 4.2.1.

Since they are in different directories there are probably two sets of
headers also. I would suspect the 4.1 2 headers are in /usr/include and the
4.2.1 headers in /usr/local/include

Remove the 4.1 2 package, or uninstall and reinstall 4.2.1 specifying
-prefix=/usr in the build

Then I have absolutely no idea why the run-time linker (I'm presuming
that Ethereal *did* compile, but that it failed to run) didn't find
those header files; I'd suggest asking the supplier of the OS you're
running.
