 Greetings, all...

I have just installed the latest flavor of Ethereal
on Win2K Professional.  I have installed (in the following order) the
Packet2K interface, the gtk-libs-20000805, and finally
ethereal-0.8.12-capture.  I wasn't able to find any installation
instructions on the Ethereal, but what I have done so far is:

1.  Installed the Packet2K driver in my
current network setup.  Rebooted the system.

2.  Unzipped the gtk-libs and ethereal
package. Copied contents of both into c:\ethereal.  Set the path to
include c:\ethereal.  Copied the dll's that were in the gtk-libs package
into c:\winnt\system32.

3.  Ran the ethereal.exe program.

O.K., so the program opens up nicely, and such
all...   When I go to capture, and select start, I get the normal
screen, but now it gets a little bit wacky.

In the interface dialog, I get something along the
lines of \device\packet_{4d44...........(whole bunch of numbers here)} and a second entry that is
\device\packet_{7977......................(whole bunch of numbers here)}.
Regardless of which I choose, when I put a file name in the file dialog and
try to start a capture, I get an error that says,

The capture session could not be initiated )Error
opening adapter).  Please check that you have th eproper interface
specified.

Note that the driver Ethereal uses for packet
capture on Windows doesn't support capturing on TOken Ring interfaces, and
doesn't support capturing on PPP/WAN interfaces in Windows NT/2000.

Has anybody seen this, and does anybody know a
solution?

BTW, the hardware in question is a Dell Inspiron
3800 with a FE575C-3COM 10/100 CardBus-Fast Ethernet card in it.
Windows 2000 Professional, Service Pack
1.

Thanks in advance for any information anyone can
offer...
