I suppose you could fall back on the Old Reliable X Font "fixed":

	ethereal -m fixed ...

It appears to be a little smaller than the Lucida Typewriter that
Ethereal uses by default, and perhaps a *little* less readable, but any
X implementation that doesn't support "fixed" is so badly broken that
its supplier should be publicly flogged.

Unfortunately:

	1) I don't know whether "fixed" is *guaranteed* to be the same
	   font on all X platforms;

	2) I don't know whether it's the "right" font for all platforms;

	3) I don't know offhand how to ask for the boldface version -
	   which is necessary in order to make highlighting work in the
	   hex dump window;

so making it the default fixed-width font for Ethereal might not be the
right answer.
