That depends on the operating system you're using, and the CPU on your
machine.

I am going to make a small comment here, without intending to tread on Guy's
toes.

The original question was "Is it necessary to compile?", and the answer to that
ought to be "No", in the sense that all reasonable platforms should have a ready
to run binary distribution available.

vim works like this, but it is a considerable effort to keep such
distributions up to date. Ideally, each should have a maintainer as
it is not a given that an aout90mated system that builds from current sources
will have the best version.

The advantages are clear: such 'distributables', for want of a better tern, could be
placed on ftp archives, included on magazine CD ROMs and incorporated into
distributions (BSD, linux) with no fuss and a minimum of formality.

However, if I were in your position than I would always compile all my tools from
sources and keep sources and tools on locked media, so the answer to
you should be moot.

If you keep up with discussions of intruder detection and packet sniffing you
have probably come across snort, if you are in a position to make a comparison
between ethereal and snort under 'combat conditions' then I think that we would all
be very interested.
