I didn't had a deep look at the current situation, but I'm asking myself (and others) if we should continue to support MATE (maintain, fix bugs, document, advise users, ...), as lua seems to be the way to go for "scriptable things".

I really don't think that it's a good idea to have two scripting systems available for all the maintenance effort and it might be confusing for users which way to go BTW.

If it's the case that lua can do all the things that MATE can (or there are workarounds), we might want to drop MATE in one of the next releases. And of course we should note users about this so they don't spend a lot of time "riding on a dead horse".
