Have you tried changing the theme? On windows you can change the GTK theme used by the Ethereal.

 

I see the following comments in the new config.nmake file that comes with 0.10.14.

 

# If you have GTK-Wimp, set this to the pathname of the directory in
# which the files are stored.
#
# If you don't have GTK-Wimp, comment this line out, so that GTK-Wimp isn't
# defined.
#
# Please note: GTK 2.8 (and later?) includes GTK-Wimp
# (in this case these GTK-Wimp related settings will have no effect)

 

What you might do is download some different themes and see if this changes the behavior.

On Windows copy the share files to the directory \Program Files\Ethereal\share\themes\Default. Then copy the lib files to the directory \Program Files\Ethereal\lib\gtk-2.0\<gtk_version>\engines. Then close Ethereal and relaunch.

Note: it is important to apply themes for the version of GTK you are running. The GTK information is listed in the Ethereal about box.
