Yes, that would be very useful. In addition to being able to mask the bitfield from the top-level item, it would be helpful if the function had the option to display text in the top-level item only on 1 or only on 0. That way, when the bitfields represent error conditions, you would only see the exceptions without cluttering up the top level unnecessarily. Perhaps you could pass the function two uint masks, one representing "display text in top-level on 1" and one representing "display text in top-level on 0".

Should there be an API for dissecting fields containing bitfields, which
will update the top-level item for the field as it's putting entries
underneath that for the bitfield? (It might have an option to keep some
bitfields from being put into the top-level item, to keep that item from
being too long.)
