Not as such, but I was chasing similar issues on my AMD64 system.

GdkPixbuf relies on loadable modules for the different file formats.
The xpm module could not be loaded, but it is crucial, because all
icons is Ethereal are in xpm format. Basically your gdk installation
is broken.

Maybe you can use strace or truss to find out the exact error message.
Or your can reinstall gdk. Also check the gdk configuration file,
which can hide in several places (/etc, /usr/local/etc, .gdkrc or so
etc). And check that ethereal is using the correct version of
libgdk_pixbuf.
