I got it wrong!

IT IS a bug, while a MAX_VAR_LEN of 100 bytes is fine for most
preferences it is short for filter strings.

I'm looking if it would be a problem to set it to a higher value.

 
B.T.W. once a BUG is marked as RESOLVED it cannot be put back into
another state (that is a a solution cannot be rejected).
