We've said this too many times, I think, without making progress yet.

Now that Paolo's patch is there, the main question is whether he gets permission from the ssldump author(s) to license this ssldump-derived code under GPL. Then

1) If yes, check the patch in. If it can be improved later to not depend on OpenSSL anymore: even better.

2) If not, we must *not* check the patch in. Anyone's still free to integrate it in his own private tree, though.
