Yes, I could confirm the problem with my GNOME installation, although KDE is working fine.
Hmm, incomplete documentation of the feature, two different implementations coming from two different teams. Well, that really reminds me badly of some "famous" software problem (namely 95 vs. NT) from a company beginning with M... (why must history always repeat?)
Could someone please check in the patch (I currently don't have the possibility), and also add this comment block to explain why (maybe just below the KDE comment):

* we have to remove the file:// to get a valid filename.
