Title: Comments on open-source codecs for G.726, G.729, et al.
I was trying to decode an RTP session that happened to be in G.726, and noticed that Ethereal didn't support that. I saw a number of other emails to the users list that said it's not supported due to various licensing issues, and then described various convoluted ways to listen to a recorded stream.
Anyway, it seems that there are now some open-source or at least no-license-fee alternatives available, which may or may not be appropriate for Ethereal. I thought I'd make you all aware of them in case you're not already. The key one to look at is how Asterix (an open-source IP PBX) handles the issue. There are probably other issues involved, such as patent issues… The Intel link is interesting in that they supply libraries that support G.726, G.729, etc, and it is free for non-commercial use, but only on Linux.
