Yes, it's more about what mechanism is more common.

Well, on win32 there's no real use of the user ID, so I don't have an 
opinion about this. Currently, I don't know of any environment variables 
used, could you give me some more info on this?

However, it will be only a cosmetical change without much effort, so we 
could change the name later again.

As the "-v" option is named as "Print the version and exit." in the 
manpage, is there any version related info?
