Just for information really. I'm receiving this problem too on my Celeron [Mendocino] laptop running Gentoo. My compiler flags are: 

CFLAGS="-O3 -mcpu=i686 -pipe"

and the version information is:
# ethereal -v
ethereal 0.10.0a
Compiled with GTK+ 2.2.4, with GLib 2.2.3, with libpcap 0.7.2, with libz 1.1.4, 
with libpcre 4.2, without UCD-SNMP or Net-SNMP, without ADNS.
Running with libpcap (version unknown) on Linux 2.4.22-gentoo-r2
