What you've seen discussed is having a protocol description mechanism 
for *Ethereal*.  Something Ethereal can use for its purposes might, or 
might not, be useful for applications/libraries that use protocols 
(such as the ones you describe) rather than dissecting them.  It might 
be possible to make something that works for both purposes, but that's 
not necessarily the case.
