I don't actually use Ethereal for capturing much these days. I could use 
tethereal, but tcpdump is often on the machines I need to capture from, 
and then I use the following:

  rtprio 10 tcpdump -i bc0 -s 1500 -w etc

and I don't get many packet drops with GigE. I am always capturing with 
GigE on FreeBSD.

We have one of those fancy Finisar GigE capture boxes, but it is in 
Pittsburgh, and it has all sorts of limitations, and the above method 
works for me.
