I'm about 80% done doing that but decided that I was wasting time:
each and every unused variable in gtk/*.c is needed in order to make
some callback function happy - so what I was doing was to just add
_U_s, lots of them and decided to write a small script for that. I
hope I'll get a patch done this sunday.

My idea goes a bit differently: After the rest is done, turn on the
warnings and wait for 4 weeks so that anyone who wants to properly
fix it will have a chance to do so, after that I'd provide a (semi-
autogenerated) patch for all files that generate warnings and don't
contain at least one _U_ anywhere. Does this sound ok?

Fine.

I found out that "pro" means "instead of" (as in proconsul). Now I know
what proactive means.
