I had a similar error and found that the libtool that is generated has some
problems in it when it performs tests.
The lines I found to have errors are:
 - line 723, added quotes around $pic_mode in test
 - line 2634, added quotes around $hardcode_into_libs and $build_old_libs in test
 - line 2674, added quotes around $build_libtool_need_lc in test
 - line 2947, added quotes around $hardcode_into_libs in test

After that it seemed to work.
I don't know why the autogenerated libtool is stuffing up like that.
