Alexandre: thanks! The header decoding is getting fleshed out nicely now and
you've added support for some possibilities I hadn't seen before and therefore
assumed didn't occur (<4 byte date/time values). You've also fixed the
deliberate mistakes I left in to see if anyone was paying
attention... ahem... :)

I still can't help feeling that this is in slightly the wrong place - and may
not work in connection-oriented mode. I'll do a little more on this later on
today.
