Yeah. I like that. Perhaps in a subdirectory, with the filename keyed on
the protocol name.

In my case, the problem is for some reason the mgcp dissector didn't get
installed (haven't looked into why that problem happened yet) - but it
had been installed before, therefore I had an issue with the configs and
the warnings.

Another benefit of your idea is that running a ethereal_static (or
ethereal where a plugin isn't installed) won't hose your config. Might
even be worthwhile having the preferences be keyable by version (like
the plugin dirs) if there was a case where someone needed to run two
different versions of ethereal - but the default would be to use the
global dir.
