The "Download" page on the Ethereal Web site says "Solaris/SPARC" in the
section for binary packages, but the local archive has a Solaris/x86
package as well, for Solaris 8.  However, it has been claimed that it
doesn't install; it's also Ethereal 0.8.12, which isn't the latest
version.

If you want a version for a pre-Solaris 8 release, or if you want the
latest version (which fixes some bugs that have caused dissector crashes
on a number of occasions), yes, you will have to download the required
software and compile it yourself.
