If you just want to investigate using RMON to capture packets I
believe that NTOP now has an RMON plugin. On the other hand if you are
trying to investigate the impact of turning on RMON on switches that's a
different matter. We regularly run the RMON agent on our Cisco Cat 5500 and
I've not heard anyone complain.

Subject: [ethereal-dev] Using RMON on switches to capture packets
Hi,
I would like to start investigating the subject of using RMON on (some)
switches to capture packets.
I am told that some switches have some level of RMON and that it might be
possible to capture packets from them.
I am also told that if one does that they will probably drop back to using
the processor to switch rather than the backplane and that performance
might suffer.
My problems are:
- Finding a switch that includes the right stuff
- getting my hands on such a switch.
Regards
