If Windump didn't capture any packets, then it's highly unlikely that
Ethereal will, since they both use the same WinPcap library, and I trust
Windump's usage of WinPcap more than Ethereal's, since WinDump and WinPcap
are made by the same folks. The WinPcap FAQ mentions that it *should*
work on a PPP connection on Win98. Perhaps someone at polito.it knows
something more. I'm copying this to ethereal-dev because some polito.it
folks hang out there.
WinPcap FAQ: http://netgroup-serv.polito.it/winpcap/misc/faq.htm
I see in the screen shot you sent me [I was amazed that AbiWord read your
MS Word file just fine, even with the embedded graphic] that you also
have a 3Com Etherlink III PCMCIA card. Coincidentally (perhaps not),
there was a Linux user with problems using a 3COM Megahertz PCMCIA
ethernet card; it appeared not to go into promiscuous mode until he
updated the linux drivers for it. It makes me wonder why WinDump won't
even use your Ethernet card for capturing.
The 3COM thread starts at:

but doesn't get interesting until:

Gilbert,
Thanks for your very prompt response. I did mean .dll's and I do have the
three files of WinPCap installed (and I was starting from Capture | start).
I tried windump but I did not capture any packets. I have enclosed a
screen shot of ethereal when started (not picking up any traffic as I
switched sites in my browser). The screen shot also has my network
settings shown.
Thanks for your help,
Jason
