Which documentation - the Ethereal documentation, or the tcpdump
documentation?

It sounds as if the tcpdump documentation would be the place to mention
this; send mail to "tcpdump-workers@xxxxxxxxxxx" about it.

Actually I meant the Ethereal documentation (filter questions crop up
fairly frequently here because there are two different area of filtering going on
with different semantics), because it is not easy to tweak a filter
using the dialogue box & extra information may help. An alternative
would be to put a number of known good filters in the distribution so
that they could be used as templates
or modules. I have a basic policy towards documentation that if I got
confused and had to ask for help, may be the next person would
appreciate a little help.

However I take your point & I shall take it to tcpdump.
